Sexual and Reproductive Health Day
Written by the Government of NunavutFebruary 12th is Sexual and Reproductive Health Day in Canada.
In 2010, Nunavut had more than 1,300 cases of Chlamydia and more than 600 cases of gonorrhea -- the highest rates in Canada. While these infections often have no symptoms they can sometimes cause problems years later such as infertility or chronic pain if they are not treated.
Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Geraldine Osborne encourages Nunavummiut to improve their sexual health by:
Talking to your partners about sexual and reproductive health issues;
- Wearing a condom – available free from local health centres and some recreation centres and businesses throughout Nunavut;
- Getting tested for sexually transmitted infections at your health centre;
- Booking a ‘well woman’ appointment at the local health centres;
- Asking for more information from your health professional.
Watch for two new Nunavut television commercials being launched today that focus on sexual and reproductive health.
